Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mt Wellington/Kunanyi Challenge? The Challenge is set in our own Hobart backyard with a race starting at Longley Pub, heading up the mountain. There are two challenges to choose from; you can ride to the summit (21.6kms) or to the Spring (14.1km),
What is the distance? 21.6km to the summit, 14.1km to the springs
Who can race? Anyone can race! From juniors to seniors and masters. U13 will only be allowed to ride up to the Springs. U15 to ride to the top.
What type of bike do I ride on? Road bikes and eBikes are acceptable. All must have working front and rear brakes
What sort of race format is this? Racing will be in a time trial format, with riders starting in smaller bunches. You are not expected to race with fellow members of this bunch, you can ride slower or faster than others and it’s expected most riders will be riding individually.
Can I ‘draft’ off another rider? Yes, if you are able to sit with another rider, this is fine
What if I get a puncture? Punctures are unfortunate, and there are not support cars behind each bunch. You can ride with spare equipment incase of this, but there will also be a ‘sag’ wagon covering the last rider of the race which you can wait for. Preferably, voice your issue to a fellow rider who can also let a race Marshall know when they get a chance.
Is it closed road? The road will be closed from Pillinger drive to the summit, the rest will be an open public road
What time does it start? The first racer will be from 7am, so you will be required to be at the site before this time for briefing and any other requirements you may need to organise before the race
How will I know where to turn? There will be a marshall at the left-hand turn onto Mt Wellington, otherwise there are no other turns required
How do I get back down? You can ride back down, with caution, alternatively you can leave a car at the top to drive back down, but you cannot drive down until the sag wagon and final rider have come through
How long is it expected to take? This will vary depending on the rider. Very fast riders may complete this in close to under 1hr, with others coming in anywhere from 1:30-2hrs.
Are there a limited number of entries? The number of racers to this event will be capped at 200 entries
Can I enter on the day? No, entries are strictly online only via entry boss.
Do I need a membership? Yes, you will require an AusCycling Membership or you will require a 4-week free trial membership offered by AusCycling: https://www.auscycling.org.au/membership/other/free-trial
Are there prizes? Yes, there will be prizes on offer!
